Oral hygiene is always important, but it is especially crucial during orthodontic treatment — including Invisalign! While it may be easy to remember to brush regularly, flossing is tricker for some individuals. How often should you floss during your Invisalign treatment, and how can you do so effectively? This blog post provides helpful information.

The Importance of Flossing with Invisalign

Invisalign aligners cover your teeth for most of the day, which can create a warm, moist environment where bacteria and plaque are trapped against your enamel. If plaque and food particles accumulate between your teeth, they can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and unpleasant odors. By flossing regularly, you help prevent these issues and support the movement of your teeth, since clean teeth respond better to orthodontic treatment.

How Often Should You Floss During Your Treatment?

Ideally, you should brush and floss after each meal during Invisalign treatment. Making flossing a part of your routine can keep your teeth clean throughout the day and minimize your risk of problems.

However, if that seems like too much, you should be sure to floss at least once or twice a day.

Tips for Effective Flossing

There is a right way and lots of wrong ways to floss! Using correct techniques help to thoroughly clean your teeth and reduces the risk of damage to your gums. Here are some tips for effective flossing:

  • Choose a floss that glides easily into tight spaces, such as waxed floss or dental tape.
  • Use gentle movements to avoid injuring your gums. Curve the floss around each tooth and slide it beneath the gumline.
  • Start with about 18 inches of floss, and roll it between your hands as you move from tooth to tooth; you should always be using a clean section.
  • If traditional floss is difficult to use, try floss picks or interdental brushes for easier access to hard-to-reach areas. You can also use a WaterPik.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash after flossing to help remove loosened particles.
  • Make sure your hands are cleaning when you floss so you do not accidentally transfer harmful bacteria to your mouth.

Consistent flossing helps you keep your teeth and gums in optimal condition during Invisalign treatment! If you have questions about how to do so correctly, speak with your dental care team.
