5 Signs You Might Need to Replace Your Veneers

Veneers are one of the most durable cosmetic treatments; a set should last for 10 – 15 years or longer. However, they do eventually reach the end of their lifespan. How can you tell if it is time for you to think about visiting your cosmetic dentist for veneer replacement? Here are five signs to look out for:

The Veneers Are Darkening

Most veneers are made out of porcelain, which is a nonporous material that is highly resistant to stains. However, they can still lose their original color over time. That might happen if the cement beneath a veneer becomes stained or if the veneer has scratches that start to collect food debris and pigments. If your veneers are starting to look yellow or dull, you should certainly talk to your cosmetic dentist to find out if their appearance can be restored or if it is time to invest in a completely new set.

The Veneers Are Damaged

Despite the outstanding durability of veneers, they can suffer from minor chips and cracks over time, particularly if you have any habits like biting your fingernails, chewing on ice, or doing anything else that increases the risk of damage to them. If you notice signs of wear and tear, it would be wise to consult with your dentist about replacing your veneers before the damage becomes much worse.

Your Oral Health Is Suffering

Veneers themselves cannot incur decay, but the teeth underneath them are still vulnerable. There is also a possibility that gum disease will develop. If you notice any symptoms like highly sensitive teeth, red gums, or swollen gums, you should certainly visit your dentist. They might have to remove your veneers to provide proper treatment. Later, after your oral health is back on track, it may be possible to replace the veneers with a new set.

You Are Ready for a New Look

Your veneers might still be in good shape, but perhaps you want to adjust the appearance of your smile. For example, many young people who purchase veneers want their color to be bright white. However, subtler-looking veneers are more popular among people who have a few more years of life behind them. When you replace your veneers, you could also ask your dentist about changing their size or shape. Of course, the decision to remove your old veneers solely for aesthetic purposes is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Your dentist will help you decide if doing so is a wise idea.

You Are Unhappy with Your Veneers

The vast majority of dentists do an excellent job of designing and placing veneers. However, there is always a small risk of human error. If there is a design flaw in your veneers or you are unhappy with them for other reasons, let your dentist know. You might have to replace them to achieve the look and feel you want.

Do you believe it is time to replace your veneers? Your cosmetic dentist is ready to help you revamp your smile.
